Slacker Mom Guide Back to School Shopping
Shop Smarter With My Guide !

Back to school time will be upon us before we know it. Don’t try and pretend you will not be dancing like it’s your 16th birthday and you just got the keys to a new car when the kids go back to school. It’s okay I love my little people but I too admit I will be kind of thrilled when they head back to school. Now, it’s time to buy the massive mountain of supplies the little people require. Our school has a very basic list.

  • 1 Backpack
  • 1 pack of crayons, colored pencils or markers
  • 1 pack of pencils
  • 4 glue sticks
  • 4 dry erase markers
  • 4 composition notebooks or spiral notebooks
  • 1 pair of scissors
  • 4 folders with two pockets and prongs
  • 1 pencil pouch, pencil box, or pencil holder
  • 2 packs of index cards (3″x5″)
  • 2 packs of wide-ruled filler paper (loose leaf)
  • 1 box of tissues (no lotions or scents)
  • 1 bottle of hand sanitizer

Shop Online Avoid the Hassle

Shopping for school supplies in the stores well quite simply blows. The shelves are always picked over here. The aisles are crowded it’s noisy and loud and I ALWAYS forget something and have to go back. So, last year I started shopping online for their supplies. Shopping this way has been a huge time and sanity saver.

Buy in Bulk Save Money

Amazon has some excellent deals on the basic back to school supplies. They have even rolled out a school supply store on their site. An example of buying in bulk and saving is with these glue sticks.

I purchased the 60 pack it’s the cheapest per stick and gives us the best bang for the buck. This is just one example of how buying in bulk saves you a lot of money and time.

The second thing I bought in bulk on Amazon was Ticonderoga Pencils. I do not buy anything but these Ticonderoga Pencils. Why? Because they last sharpen beautifully and don’t break easily. It’s a no brainer in my book. Buy quality when you can afford it. Now please try and control yourselves people I got 72 pre sharpened pencils for $9.99 ! I know exciting right? The last couple of years after the list has come out the teachers have asked for pre-sharpened pencils. At, first I wasn’t thrilled with this request. Then I volunteered in class and waiting for a line of kiddos to sharpen pencils is excruciatingly painful. Plus, it’s a drain on the teachers time so help them out and buy the pre-sharpened ones.

Crayons typically the 24 pack from Crayola is NOT a deal on Amazon. I recommend getting them from WalMart in store for $0.50 a piece or from Target for the same price in store also. I avoided going into the store and got my Crayons brought out to me using WalMart Grocery Pickup.

Wide ruled composition notebooks are another thing we always need more than the required four of. Amazon has a 100 sheet composition notebook from their basics brand. A four pack costs 9.99 😂any other time I might pick them up there trying to get as much done from home as possible. But, once again WalMart saves the day $0.50 a composition notebook. Use WalMart Grocery pickup and get the better deal and save some money.

Buy It Nice or Buy it Again

Backpacks Quality Matters

We have all been there your little person begs for a Shopkins or Pokemon backpack and you cave. Before the end of the school year you will be buying another bag for them. The character stuff DOES NOT last long enough for the money you pay for it. Plus, my kids taste change from year to year for cartoons and other trendy items. I bought my son an orange and black camouflage backpack in Kindergarten and he will be using it now as he starts third grade.

This is the backpack brand we use :

JanSport lasts for pretty much freakin’ ever. I myself have a JanSport laptop back that’s 15 years old.

Lunch boxes

Another Area where quality matters is definitely lunch time gear. A sturdy insulated lunch box became a necessity in my house. Especially when they went straight to recess after lunch. Ugh….being thrown into a pile on the play ground is hard on a lunchbox for sure. We’ve gotten a lot of use out of these Pack it lunch bags. The freezing gel is built into the sides of the bag. It’s one less thing for the kiddos to keep up with and we haven’t had any issues with the bag breaking or punctures and leaks. They come in a variety of colors and patterns to keep you and your kiddos happy with the choice.

Lunch Containers

For sandwiches we use these Sistema Klip It Collection boxes. Yes, they are plastic I’m not brave enough to send my kids with glass to school yet but they are extremely sturdy and BPA free. The clip closures on the sides make it easy for little hand to open and close the boxes.

Water Bottles

Using insulated water bottles for my kids is an absolute must because we use them when we travel, for sports and school lunches. I looooveee love love these bottles from Simple Modern because there is no straw and even my littlest who was in Kindergarten last year could flip open the top herself. They come in a variety of colors and patterns. We love giving everyone in the house a particular color for things like water bottles it cuts down on the confusion.

Utensils and Keeping Clean After Lunch

A spork is a gift for Moms of kiddos it has a spoon, fork and a simple cutting edge that won’t be against school rules. You get everything you need all in one. The less stuff the kiddos carry for lunch the better chance it all comes back home. I promise this will work out beautifully. We love these Light My Fire BPA free Sporks they come in a four pack and we adore the primary colors.

Napkins and Wipes

We use alcohol free Babyganics wipes that are individually wrapped in the kids lunch boxes so they can wash their hands after they eat. We’ve also used Handzies too. Both are awesome and smell great. My oldest has sensory issues so it’s always a bonus when something doesn’t drive him nuts with odors. I don’t put paper napkins in their lunch boxes. I figure I’m already using throwaway wipes everyday and need to even the balance . I know I’m contributing to the waste but that whole clean freak Mom thing keeps my guilt low. We use these cloth napkins. I always buy the white because they can be bleached out easily.

What Do you Do?

So, I’m eager to know where you guys shop. I’ve had several people tell me things like dry erase markers at The Dollar Store are awesome. Has anyone got any killer shopping tips to share? I love it when I learn from my readers. If you think this post will benefit a friend please share it with them via text, email or social media. It helps me out too !
