Deet manufacturing began for the Military in the 1940’s by the USDA. It has been widely available since 1957. There are several schools of thought on Deet and it’s use. Most definitely I am not a Doctor or a medical professional. I can only tell you for myself and my family we prefer to use something other than Deet. I believe Deet is so prevalent mosquitos are becoming immune to it. ‘This is a study that shows compelling evidence in my opinion to not use Deet.

My Family The Mosquito Magnets

My Son is the biggest mosquito magnet in my family. This pristine bug free arm will not be that way for long. So we decided to see what works on all of us. Because it doesn’t seem to matter what we use we all have a bite or two after a bike ride, camping trip or just working i the garden.

The Contestants In Order Of What Works Best

The Winner

Six hours of bug free protection for me, my mosquito magnets and myself. Just as the product proclaimed it worked for us. Lemon and Eucalyptus Oil. The product does contain 45% ethananol so obviously don’t spray it in your eyes. Application was easy just follow the directions and go enjoy the bug free outdoors.

Coming in at Second Place

This spray is the #1 best seller on Amazon in the Pest Repellant category. Sawyer Picaridin topical spray is effective for up to 12 hours against mosquitoes and ticks, and up to 8 hours of protection against biting flies, gnats, chiggers, and sand flies. Why isn’t this number one for us. I had a light rash on my neck after using this. However, it worked just fine on my Husband, Son, and Daughter. It has no odor and last longer than the number one choice on my list.

And Bringing up the Rear

I love the idea of a band that you just slip on the wrist or ankle and out the door you go. It appeals to me also that it was infused with Citronella, Lemongrass and Geraniol Oils. Then the added bonus of being DEET free was a total winner in my book. We used these on a two mile bike ride and it was okay. I had a few bites and my kids had one each.

What do you use ?

So, my recommendation is for the Repel Spray. In my opinion it’s the best spray of the DEET free alternatives available on Amazon. What mosquito repellents do you use in your home?
